Baleshed, also known as Baleshed Landing or Stack Landing, was once a small community. Today, it is a ghost town in Issaquena County, Mississippi. This former town was located right on the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.

Discovering Baleshed: A Ghost Town's Story

Baleshed is a place where people once lived and worked, but now it's mostly empty. It's called a ghost town because most of its buildings are gone. Only a few signs of its past remain.

What is a Ghost Town?

A ghost town is a place that used to be a town or city. Over time, most or all of its people moved away. This can happen for many reasons. Sometimes, a local industry closes down. Other times, natural events like floods make people leave.

The Story of Baleshed's Name

The land where Baleshed stood was given to a person named Stephen Duncan in 1833. The town got its name from a special building. This building was a "shed" where large bundles of cotton, called "bales," were stored. The cotton bales waited there before being shipped away on the river.

Life in Baleshed

Baleshed was a small but active place in its time. It even had its own post office. This post office helped people send and receive mail. It operated under the name Baleshed from 1888 to 1917. In 1900, only 24 people lived in the town.

What Remains Today?

By the year 2000, most of Baleshed was gone. However, one interesting thing remained. There was a stone vault still standing. This vault was once used to store money safely. It's a small reminder of the town's past.
