Balfour Castle was once a grand home in Angus, Scotland. It was located at Balfour Mains, near a place called Kirkton of Kingoldrum. This impressive building was constructed way back in the 1500s.

Today, most of Balfour Castle is gone. Only a tall, round tower, which is six stories high, still stands. A farmhouse was built around 1845, using some of the old castle's stones. In 1971, both the farmhouse and the castle ruins were recognized as a special historic site. This means they are protected because of their importance.

What Was Balfour Castle?

Balfour Castle was known as a "baronial mansion." This means it was a large, fancy house, often owned by a nobleman or a very important family. It wasn't a military fort, but a grand home. These types of buildings were common for wealthy people in Scotland centuries ago.

A Glimpse into History

The castle was built in the 16th century, which means sometime in the 1500s. Imagine what life was like back then! People lived very differently. Building such a large stone structure would have been a huge project. It would have taken many skilled workers a long time to complete.

What Remains Today?

Over time, many old buildings change or fall apart. Balfour Castle is an example of this. Most of its original structure was taken down. However, the tall, circular tower still stands proudly. This tower gives us a clue about how the castle once looked.

Around 1845, a new farmhouse was built on the site. The builders used some of the stones from the old castle. This is a common way that old buildings are recycled. It helps to preserve a bit of the past.

Why Is It Important?

In 1971, Balfour Castle's remains and the farmhouse were given a special status. They became a "Category B listed building." This means they are considered important historical structures. Being listed helps protect them for future generations. It ensures that these old buildings are looked after and their history is remembered.
