The Ballena Marine National Park is a special protected area in Costa Rica. Its name, "Ballena," means "whale" in Spanish. This park was created to be a safe home for humpback whales. They travel here from far away to have their babies.
The park covers a huge area of water, about 5,160 hectares (12,750 acres). It also includes 171 hectares (422 acres) of land. The park was officially started on June 9, 1992. It is an important part of the Osa Conservation Area.

Why is it called "Ballena"?
The park got its name because of the amazing whales that visit it. "Ballena" is the Spanish word for whale. This name perfectly describes the park's main purpose. It is a safe haven for these giant ocean creatures.
Home to Amazing Whales
One of the most exciting things about Ballena Marine National Park is its visitors. From December to April, many humpback whales come here. They travel from colder waters to the warm, tropical coast of Central America. This is where they breed and raise their young calves.
After their time in Costa Rica, the whales migrate again. From June to November, they swim north. They travel all the way to the West Coast of the United States and southern British Columbia. There, they find plenty of food to eat.

Besides the ocean, the park also has beautiful land areas. These include several lovely beaches. You can visit Ballena beach, Uvita bay beach, and Piñuela beach. These sandy shores are part of the protected park.

Ballena Marine National Park plays a key role in protecting marine life. It helps keep the ocean healthy for whales and other creatures. The park is managed by the National System of Conservation Areas (SINAC). This group works hard to preserve Costa Rica's natural beauty.
