The Story of Balsakha Magazine

How Balsakha Began

Balsakha magazine first came out in 1917. It was started by Chintamani Ghosh. He was the founder of Indian Press Prayag, located in Allahabad. Mr. Ghosh also published another famous magazine called Saraswati (magazine).

The very first editor of Balsakha was Pandit Badrinath Bhatt. Later, Thakur Srinath Singh took over and edited the magazine for many years. Balsakha was published every month, bringing new stories and articles to its young readers.

Why Balsakha Was Special

Balsakha is still remembered today in Hindi children's literature. It was published monthly for more than 50 years. Many famous writers of that time wrote for Balsakha. They shared their stories and ideas with children.

The magazine was sent to libraries in different states. It even went to places like juvenile jails in British India. Balsakha was known for sharing stories about important national leaders. Because of this, a committee in Punjab stopped subscribing to it before India became independent.

Focusing on Young Readers

The people who published and edited Balsakha believed children were important. They saw kids as independent thinkers. Their goal was to create literature just for children. They focused on topics that interested young people. This is why Balsakha stayed popular with children for such a long time. It truly understood its young audience.
