The Baltimore and Ohio Related Industries Historic District is a special area in Martinsburg, West Virginia. It's located on both sides of the famous Baltimore and Ohio Railroad tracks. This district is important because it shows how much the railroad shaped the city.
It includes the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Martinsburg Shops, which is a very important historical site. Many businesses and factories that relied on the railroad are also part of this district.
Exploring the B&O Historic District
This historic district isn't just about buildings. It also includes important structures built for the railroad. For example, Tuscarora Creek was changed to fit the railroad. You can also see special tunnels for roads (underpasses) and strong walls (retaining walls).
What You'll Find Here
Besides the main railroad shops, there are other cool buildings. The old B. & O. Railroad station and hotel are key parts of the district. Many industrial buildings are also here. These include places like coal yards, plaster mills, and feed mills. There were even distilleries and other factories. All these businesses depended on the railroad to move their goods.
