Early Career in India
Lloyd started his career by joining the East India Company. This was a powerful British company that managed trade and ruled parts of India for a long time. He took part in several military campaigns, like the Gwalior Campaign. By 1846, he was working as a civil commissioner in an Indian district. This meant he helped manage the area for the British government.
He was in India during a time of big changes, including the Indian Mutiny, which was a major uprising against British rule. After this, he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel. Because the climate in India was not good for his health, he decided to move.
Moving to South Africa
Lloyd left India and moved to Natal, which is now part of South Africa. His ability to speak Hindustani, a language spoken in India, was very valuable. At that time, many Indian immigrants had moved to Natal, and the government needed someone who could understand and help them.
By 1872, Lloyd became the "Protector of Indian Immigrants." This job meant he was responsible for looking after the rights and well-being of Indian people living in Natal. In 1874, he took on an even bigger role as the acting Colonial Secretary of Natal. This made him a very important person in the local government. He also got a seat on the Natal Legislative Council, which was a group that helped make laws for the colony. In 1875, he was promoted to the high military rank of major-general.
