Bandi Chhor Diwas is a special festival celebrated by Sikhs. It means "Day of Liberation." This day remembers when the Sixth Sikh Guru, Guru Hargobind Ji, helped 52 kings gain their freedom from prison. It is celebrated on the same day as Deepavali, the festival of lights.

What is Bandi Chhor Diwas?

Bandi Chhor Diwas is a very important day for Sikhs. The words "Bandi Chhor" mean "prisoner release." This festival reminds Sikhs about freedom and justice. It is a time for joy and celebration.

The Story of Freedom

Long ago, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir imprisoned Guru Hargobind Ji in Gwalior Fort. Many kings were also held there. Guru Hargobind Ji was a spiritual leader and a brave warrior. When the Emperor decided to release Guru Hargobind Ji, the Guru made a special request. He said he would only leave if the 52 kings imprisoned with him could also go free.

The Emperor agreed, but with a trick. He said only the kings who could hold onto Guru Hargobind Ji's cloak would be released. Guru Hargobind Ji was very clever. He had a special cloak made with 52 tassels, or long ropes. Each of the 52 kings held onto one tassel. This way, all 52 kings were able to walk out of the prison with Guru Hargobind Ji. This brave act is why the day is called Bandi Chhor Diwas, the "Day of Liberation."

How Sikhs Celebrate

Sikhs celebrate Bandi Chhor Diwas with great happiness. They clean their homes and shops. They decorate them with many lamps and candles, just like during Diwali. People visit their local Gurdwara, which is a Sikh temple. There, they listen to holy songs called kirtan. They also share langar, a free community meal served to everyone.

Families and friends gather together. They share sweets with their neighbors and help those in need. It is a day to remember the importance of freedom and to show kindness to others.

When is it Celebrated?

Bandi Chhor Diwas is usually celebrated in October or November. The exact date changes each year because it follows the lunar calendar. This calendar is based on the cycles of the moon.
