Bangor is a small, unincorporated community in Marshall County, Iowa, United States. An unincorporated community means it's a group of homes or businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government.
You can find Bangor where County Highway E18 and S62 meet. It's about five miles southwest of Liscomb and six miles south of Union. The community is also located close to the west bank of the Iowa River.
History of Bangor
Bangor was started by a person named Abijah Hodgins in August 1854. It was first settled by a group called the Quakers. Quakers are a religious group known for their peaceful beliefs and for helping others.
Bangor's Role in the Underground Railroad
Bangor played a special part in history. It was involved in the Underground Railroad. This was a secret network of safe places and routes. It helped people who were escaping slavery find freedom in states where slavery was illegal or in Canada. The people of Bangor, especially the Quakers, were known for helping those on this journey.
