The Bank Building was a very old and important building in Uxbridge, Massachusetts. It was located at 40-44 South Street. This building was special because it was one of the best-kept commercial buildings from the 1800s in Uxbridge. It was built in 1895 and 1896. In 1983, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list helps protect important historical places. Sadly, the building was destroyed by a fire in 2013.

What Was the Bank Building Like?

The Bank Building stood near the main shopping area of Uxbridge. It was on the east side of South Main Street. It was also across from the Town Hall.

Its Design and Features

This building had three floors. It was made of red bricks. It also had fancy parts made from granite, wood, and cast iron. The roof was flat and had a simple edge.

On the ground floor, there were two shops. A main entrance to the building was in the middle of these shops. Each shop had a door that was set back a bit. They also had big glass windows for showing things. Strong cast iron poles with fancy tops stood next to these windows. A wooden edge and a granite line separated the first floor from the second.

The upper floors had many windows. Some parts had one window, while others had two. There were also cool brick designs between the second and third-floor windows.

A Brief History

The Bank Building was finished in 1896. The ground floor was used for shops. The second floor had offices. The third floor was a big space for meetings.

The first businesses to move in were the Blackstone National Bank and the Uxbridge Savings Bank. They had to move because their old building, the Capron Building, burned down in 1896. The Bank Building was a new home for them.

Sadly, in July 2013, a big fire badly damaged the building. Because of the damage, it had to be taken down.
