The Bank of Addis building is a special old building in Addis, Louisiana. It used to be a bank, but now it's home to the Addis Museum. It's a historic place that tells a story about the town's past.
History of the Bank Building
The Bank of Addis started in 1919 and its building was finished in 1920. This bank was an important part of a busy small town. Many businesses grew up around a main stop for the Texas and Pacific Railroad.
The building worked as the Bank of Addis until 1925. Then, the bank changed its name to Port Allen Bank and Trust Company. This building became its Addis Branch. The branch closed around 1930. The building was empty for a few years.
In 1936, the building got a new job! It became the town's post office. Later, a grocery store was added next to the post office. Both the post office and grocery store stayed open until 1981.
The Town of Addis bought the building in 1984. They decided to turn it into a community museum. This museum helps people learn about the history of Addis. Because of its important history, the building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. This means it's a special place worth protecting.
Building's Design and Look
The Bank of Addis building is a small, one-story building made of brick. It has a classic look that was popular when it was built.
- Front Entrance: The front has a porch with two big pillars. These pillars make the building look grand and welcoming.
- Roofline Details: Look up and you'll see special brick designs called a corbelled brick cornice. This is like a fancy border made of bricks. Above that, there's a stepped parapet with concrete panels. This means the top of the wall goes up in steps, adding to its unique shape.
The building faces the old railroad tracks. It's the only building left from the busy business area that used to be there. This makes it a really important reminder of the town's past.
In 1992, when the building was studied for its history, only the strong bank vault was left from its time as a bank.
