The Bank of America Center is a very tall building, called a skyscraper. It is located in Downtown Orlando, Florida. This impressive building stands 404 feet (about 123 meters) high. It is one of the tallest buildings in the city. Its unique design makes it a special part of Orlando's skyline.
The building has a postmodern style. This means it mixes old and new design ideas. It was designed by Morris-Aubry Architects from Texas. They based its look on another building they designed in Austin, Texas. The Bank of America Center has 10 spires, which are tall, pointed structures. These spires give it a look similar to old gothic buildings. Its staircase design also makes it look a bit like another Bank of America building in Houston.
The building was once owned by Cousins Properties. This company is based in Atlanta, Georgia. In January 2018, it was sold to Southwest Value Partners. This company is from San Diego, California.
History of the Bank of America Center
How the Building Began
In April 1985, a company called Pillar-Bryton announced big plans. They showed a model for a new project in downtown Orlando. This project was named "du Pont Centre." It was planned for a large 10-acre area off Orange Avenue. The total cost for the entire project was estimated to be $400 million. The first building, which is now the Bank of America Center, was expected to cost $78 million.
The announcement was made by William DuPont III. He was the owner of the development company. He was also an heir to the wealthy Du Pont family. In 1985, a magazine called Forbes estimated his wealth. They said the 32-year-old heir had at least $125 million.
Changes in Ownership
Later, William du Pont III sold the parts of the property that were not yet developed. Due to some business challenges, he also sold his share of the building in the 1990s.
The building has been getting some updates. The current owners planned to spend $1 million to $2 million on renovations each year. These updates were set to continue until 2020. This could mean a total of $8 million spent on improvements. The current owners got the property when they bought Parkway Properties. That was a very large deal worth billions of dollars. Parkway Properties had bought the building in May 2011 for about $61 million.
In January 2018, a real estate company bought the building. This company was Southwest Value Partners from San Diego. They paid $81.86 million for the Bank of America Center. They also bought two other buildings in downtown Orlando. The total deal for all three buildings was worth over $208 million.
