Banshee
The Bunworth Banshee, from an old book of Irish fairy tales (1825)

A Banshee is a special kind of female spirit from old Irish stories. People believed she would appear to warn a family that someone was about to die. The word "Banshee" comes from the Irish words bean sí, which means "woman from the hills" or "woman of the fairy mounds." An older way to spell it was bean sidhe. Sometimes, people also called her bean sith or bean-nighe.

What is a Banshee?

Banshees are part of Celtic mythology, which includes many old stories and beliefs from Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. In these tales, a Banshee is often seen as a messenger from the spirit world. She is usually linked to certain old Irish families. When a Banshee appears, it is a sign that a family member will soon pass away.

Where Do Banshees Come From?

The idea of the Banshee comes from ancient Irish folklore. These stories have been passed down through many generations. Some legends say Banshees are spirits of women who died violently. Others believe they are fairy women who have a special connection to human families. They are often linked to the Aos Sí, which are like fairies or spirits in Irish and Scottish myths.

What Do Banshees Do?

The main role of a Banshee is to announce a death. She does this by making a very loud and sad sound. This sound is often described as a wail, shriek, or keen.

  • The Wail: This is the most famous part of a Banshee's visit. Her cry is said to be so piercing and sorrowful that it can chill anyone who hears it.
  • Warning Sign: The wailing is not meant to cause harm. Instead, it is a warning to the family. It gives them time to prepare for the loss of a loved one.
  • Appearance: Banshees are often described in different ways. Some stories say they look like beautiful young women. Others describe them as old, scary figures with long, flowing hair. They might wear white, grey, or green clothes.

Different Types of Banshees

Not all Banshees are the same in every story.

  • The Washerwoman: In some tales, a Banshee might appear as a washerwoman. She is seen washing bloody clothes of the person who is about to die. This version is sometimes called a bean-nighe (meaning "washing woman").
  • The Fairy Woman: Other stories connect Banshees more directly to the fairy world. They are seen as elegant and mysterious beings.

Banshees in Modern Culture

Even today, Banshees appear in books, movies, and video games. They are a popular part of fantasy stories. These modern tales often show Banshees as powerful supernatural beings. They keep the idea of their mournful cry and their connection to death. This shows how old legends can still be interesting to people today.
