Who Were the Banu Khalaf?
The first leader of the Banu Khalaf family was a man named Khalaf Ibn Rashid. He started his rule around the year 802. He and his family settled in a village they named Midayar. Today, this place is known as Barbastro.
Barbastro Castle
The castle in Barbastro was very important. It was the main center of the Muslim lands in that area, known as Al-Andalus. This castle helped the Banu Khalaf family control the region.
The Rulers of Banu Khalaf
Khalaf Ibn Rashid ruled for many years. He passed away sometime before 862. After his death, his son, Abd Allah ibn Khalaf, took over.
Abd Allah's Rule
In 862, the control of Huesca was given to another powerful family called the Banu Qasi. So, Abd Allah ibn Khalaf only ruled Barbitanya.
Alliances and Conflicts
In the 870s, Abd Allah ibn Khalaf made an alliance. He joined forces with a rebel leader named Isma'il ibn Musa al-Qasawi. To make their alliance stronger, Abd Allah married his daughter to Isma'il.
The End of Banu Khalaf Rule
Because of Abd Allah's alliance with the rebel, the ruler of Córdoba, Muhammad I of Córdoba, was not happy. He decided to take action.
Taking Control
Towards the end of the 870s, Muhammad I of Córdoba marched into Huesca. He defeated Abd Allah ibn Khalaf and sadly, all of Abd Allah's children were killed. Muhammad I then took control of all the lands that belonged to the Banu Khalaf family. This marked the end of their rule.
