Kids Encyclopedia Facts
Tadamichi Kuribayashi
Banzai charges were forbidden by Tadamichi Kuribayashi, the Japanese commander during the Battle of Iwo Jima. He thought these charges wasted his soldiers' lives.

A Banzai charge was a special attack used by Japanese soldiers, especially during World War II. It was a very risky move, often a final attempt to win a battle when they were losing or outnumbered. The soldiers would shout "Banzai!" which means "Long live the Emperor!" or "Ten thousand years!" as they charged forward. This was a way for them to show their courage and fight bravely until the very end.

What Was a Banzai Charge?

A Banzai charge was a direct, all-out attack. Japanese soldiers would rush at the enemy, often with bayonets fixed to their rifles. They aimed to break through enemy lines or cause as much damage as possible. These charges were usually a last resort when a battle seemed lost.

Why Did Soldiers Use Banzai Charges?

Japanese soldiers believed it was very important to fight with honor and never surrender. A Banzai charge was seen as a brave way to continue fighting, even when facing overwhelming odds. It was a way to show loyalty and determination.

When Were Banzai Charges Used?

Banzai charges were often used in the later parts of World War II, especially in the Pacific theater. As the war went on, Japanese forces sometimes found themselves outnumbered by American and other Allied troops. In these tough situations, a Banzai charge was sometimes ordered as a desperate measure.

Famous Banzai Charges

Many Banzai charges happened during the war. One well-known example was during the Battle of Attu in 1943. Japanese soldiers launched a large Banzai charge against American forces. Even though it was a very brave effort, it did not change the outcome of the battle. Another example is from the Battle of Saipan in 1944, where one of the largest Banzai charges of the war took place.

The Meaning of "Banzai"

The word "Banzai" (萬歳) is a Japanese cheer that means "ten thousand years." It is often used to express joy, enthusiasm, or to wish someone a long life. When soldiers shouted "Banzai!" during a charge, it was a powerful cry of loyalty to their Emperor and their country.
