Baptist Noel, 4th Earl of Gainsborough (born 1708 – died March 21, 1751) was an important English nobleman. He was known as a peer, which means he held a high social rank. He was also a Member of Parliament, helping to make laws for the country. Before 1714, he was called Viscount Campden.

Early Life and Family

Baptist Noel was born in 1708. His father was Baptist Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough. His mother was Lady Dorothy Manners. She was the daughter of John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland.

Becoming an Earl

When his father passed away in 1714, Baptist Noel became the 4th Earl of Gainsborough. This meant he inherited his father's title and responsibilities.

As an Earl, he held important roles. He was the High Steward of Chipping Campden. In 1737, he was also made the Warden and Chief Ranger of Lyfield Forest. These roles involved managing land and local affairs.

In 1728, Baptist Noel married Elizabeth Chapman. They had several children together:

  • Lady Lucy Noel, who married Sir Horatio Mann, 2nd Baronet. They had children.
  • Lady Sophia Noel, who married Christopher Nevile. They had one child.
  • Lady Elizabeth Noel (1731–1801).
  • Lady Jane Noel (1733–1811), who married Gerard Edwardes. They had one child, Sir Gerard Noel, 2nd Baronet.
  • Lady Juliana Noel (1734–1760), who married George Evans, 3rd Baron Carbery. They had one child.
  • Baptist Noel, 5th Earl of Gainsborough (1740–1759). He never married.
  • Henry Noel, 6th Earl of Gainsborough (1743–1798). He also never married.

The 4th Earl of Gainsborough died when he was in his early forties. His oldest son, Baptist Noel, became the 5th Earl. Later, his younger son, Henry Noel, became the 6th Earl.

When the 6th Earl died in 1798 without children, the Earl of Gainsborough title ended for a while. The family's lands went to his nephew, Sir Gerard Noel, 2nd Baronet. Later, in 1841, Sir Charles Noel, who was the 3rd Baronet and Gerard's son, was given the title of Earl of Gainsborough again.
