Barbara Burns' Political Journey
Barbara Burns started her political career in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. This is a group of elected officials who make laws for the entire state of Pennsylvania.
Serving in the State House
On March 7, 1994, Barbara Burns was elected to the State House. She took over the spot that Thomas Murphy had left. He had been elected as the Mayor of Pittsburgh, which is the leader of the city government.
However, when it was time for the next election, Barbara Burns did not win. She was defeated in the primary election by Don Walko. A primary election is an early election where political parties choose which candidates will run in the main election.
Joining the Pittsburgh City Council
Later, in 1999, Barbara Burns decided to run for a different political job. She successfully won a seat on the Pittsburgh City Council. The City Council is a group of elected officials who make decisions and laws for the city of Pittsburgh.
She ran for the seat in the first district, which was becoming open because Dan Onorato was leaving that position. Barbara Burns served on the City Council. In 2004, she ran for re-election but was defeated by Luke Ravenstahl.
