About Barbara Fitzgerald
Barbara Fitzgerald was born Barbara Gregg in Cork, Ireland, on 16 December 1911. Her parents were John Allen Fitzgerald Gregg and Anna Gregg.
Her Early Life and Education
Barbara spent her childhood in Kilkenny and Dublin. She also went to school in England. In 1931, she started studying at Trinity College Dublin. She was a very good student, becoming a "foundation scholar." In 1933, she graduated with high honors in Italian and French languages.
Marriage and Family Life
On 21 August 1935, Barbara married Michael Fitzgerald Somerville. Their wedding was a big event in Dublin, with many people watching. Her father performed the ceremony. After the wedding, the couple went to Scotland for their honeymoon.
Barbara's husband worked as an oil executive. They lived in West Africa for a while. However, they returned to England when World War II began. Barbara and Michael had two children: a son named Julian and a daughter named Christina.
Her Books
Barbara Fitzgerald was known for her novels. Her first book, We are besieged, came out in 1946. This story was about an old Irish house being destroyed in 1920. Some parts of her book were similar to the writings of another author, Elizabeth Bowen.
Her second novel, Footprints upon water, was first published in 1955. This book became popular again after her death. It was reissued in 1983 and then again in 2012. We are besieged was also republished in 2011. These new editions helped more people discover her wonderful stories.
Later Years
In 1968, Barbara and her husband moved back to Ireland. She faced some health challenges in her later years. Barbara Fitzgerald passed away in Dublin on 21 May 1982.
