Barbara Greenwood was born in Toronto, Canada, on September 14, 1940. Her birth name was Barbara Auer. She went to Toronto Teachers College to learn how to be a teacher. Later, she earned a degree from the University of Toronto. She taught young students in elementary school for many years. She also taught older students how to write creative stories.

Barbara was once the president of a group called the Canadian Society of Children's Authors, Illustrators and Performers (CANSCAIP). This group helps people who create books and art for kids. She also helped edit many books that CANSCAIP published.

In 1966, Barbara married Robert E. Greenwood. They had four children together. One of their children is Ed Greenwood, who is famous for creating the fantasy world of Forgotten Realms.
