Fields Molecular biology

Barbara Hohn (born on September 15, 1939) is an amazing Austrian scientist. She is a molecular biologist, which means she studies tiny things like DNA and cells. Dr. Hohn is especially famous for her work on a special kind of bacteria called Agrobacterium tumefaciens. This bacteria is very interesting because it can transfer its own DNA into plants!

Early Life and Education

Barbara Hohn was born in Klagenfurt, Austria. Her birth name was Barbara Freiinger.

  • From 1957 to 1962, she studied chemistry at the University of Vienna.
  • After that, she worked at the Max Planck Institute for Virus Research. This is a famous research center in Germany.
  • In 1967, she earned her advanced science degree, called a doctorate, from the University of Tübingen.

Barbara Hohn's Career

After getting her degree, Dr. Hohn continued her important research.

  • She worked as a researcher at Yale and Stanford Universities in the United States.
  • In 1971, she moved to the Biozentrum at the University of Basel in Switzerland.
  • By 1978, she became a leader of a research group at the Friedrich Miescher Institute.
  • Later, in 1989, she became a professor of molecular genetics at the University of Basel.
  • She became an adjunct professor there in 1996.
  • Dr. Hohn retired from her full-time work in 2004.

Her main research focused on Agrobacterium tumefaciens. She studied how this bacteria can naturally "engineer" plants by adding its own genes to them. This research has been very helpful for scientists who want to make plants better.

Dr. Hohn is also a member of two important science groups:

  • The Austrian Academy of Sciences
  • The Royal Society in the United Kingdom

Awards and Recognition

Barbara Hohn has received many awards for her scientific work.

  • In 1977, she was given a special lectureship by the European Molecular Biology Organisation (EMBO).
  • The City of Basel awarded her their Science Prize in 1992.
  • In 2010, she received the Ludwig Wittgenstein Prize from the Austrian Research Association.

Personal Life

Barbara Hohn is married to another molecular biologist, Thomas Hohn. They have two sons together.
