After attending Jamestown College, she moved to New York City. This was just after her 20th birthday. She had called the famous children's book author Maurice Sendak for advice. He told her to move to New York to pursue her dream. She also studied art briefly at the Art Students League of New York.

Career as an Illustrator

Early in her career, McClintock worked for Jim Henson. She illustrated books for his popular television show Fraggle Rock. This helped her start her journey in children's literature.
