The Barden and Ribee Saddlery is a very old and important building in Maitland, Australia. It used to be a place where saddles and other gear for horses were made and sold. This historic building is located at 473 High Street. It was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means it is a special building protected by law because of its history and importance.

A Look at the Saddlery's History

The Barden & Ribee company was a very successful business in Maitland. It started in 1872. Two partners, Thomas J. Ribee and J. W. Barden, created the company together.

Building a New Home for the Business

As their business grew, they needed a bigger place. So, a new building was constructed in 1888. John W. Pender designed this new building. Robert James was the builder who constructed it. The ground floor of the building was used as a shop. Customers could come in and buy items there. The second floor was used for storage. There was also a special workroom on site. This is where the saddlers made and repaired items.

The Business Over Time

After the original partners passed away, their families continued to run the business. The Barden & Ribee Saddlery stayed in their families for many years. The business finally closed down around the 1970s. The building was then sold in 1978.

What is it Now?

Today, the old saddlery building has been changed into a restaurant. However, you can still see clues about its past. It still looks like the saddlery it once was.

What the Saddlery Looks Like

The Barden & Ribee Saddlery is a two-story building. It is made of brick. The building is designed in a style called Victorian Free Classical. This style was popular a long time ago. It often features grand, balanced designs.

Special Features of the Building

You can still see the original signs on the outside of the building. Some signs are on the second floor. Others are above a window on the ground floor. These signs tell you what the building used to be.

Why This Building is Important

The City of Maitland says this building is a great example of an old commercial building from the Victorian era. It helps us understand how businesses operated back then. It also shows how much people in the 1800s relied on horses for travel. The saddlery is an important reminder of that time.

Why it's a Heritage Site

The Barden & Ribee Saddlery was officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means it is recognized as a place of special historical value. It is protected so future generations can learn from it.
