How the Observatory Started
The observatory was founded in 1953. A group of ornithologists, who are scientists who study birds, started it. They came from groups like the West Midland Bird Club and the West Wales Field Society. Local people also helped to set it up.
These bird experts saw a great chance to create a new bird observatory. They also wanted to study the amazing nature of this small island.
What Bird Scientists Do Here
The main goal of the observatory is to watch and count the birds on the island. They keep track of both birds that live there all the time and those that are just passing through. These passing birds are called migratory birds.
The staff at the observatory do a bird count every day. Each evening, they write down all the birds they saw that day. Spring and summer are very busy times. This is when they count the populations of birds that breed on the island. This includes both landbirds and seabirds.
Why Bardsey Island is So Important
BBFO is one of only two fully approved bird observatories in Wales. It is also one of 20 approved observatories around the coasts of the UK and Ireland. The Bird Observatories Council officially recognizes it.
Bardsey Island, also known as Ynys Enlli, is very important for nature. It has many special protections. For example, it is a National Nature Reserve (NNR). It is also a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). These titles mean the island's wildlife and habitats are protected. It is also part of the Llyn Peninsula Heritage Coast.
The Team at the Observatory
Steven Stansfield is the current Warden and Director of Operations. He has lived on the island since January 1998. He is the longest-serving staff member at the Observatory.
Bardsey Bird Observatory and Field Centre is a registered charity. This means it is a non-profit organization that helps a good cause.
