Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Barjarg Tower is an old, historic building located in Scotland. It's a special type of castle called a tower house, built around the year 1680. You can find it about four miles south-east of a place called Penpont in Dumfriesshire. Today, it's connected to a larger house built in the 1800s.

A Look Back in Time: Barjarg Tower's History

The land where Barjarg Tower stands was first given to a man named Thomas Grierson in 1587. This gift came from a powerful noble, the Earl of Morton. Later, Thomas's son, John Grierson, and his wife, Grizel Kilpatrick, were the ones who actually built the tower we see today. Over the years, other interesting people owned Barjarg Tower. One owner was a judge named Lord Tinwald. Another was a minister, Andrew Hunter.

What Barjarg Tower Looks Like

Barjarg Tower has been updated inside over the years. It features a special top edge called a crenellated parapet. This means it has gaps and raised parts, like the top of a traditional castle wall. This part might have been added later. The tower also has three small, tower-like structures called turrets. One is open and round, while the other two have pointy, cone-shaped roofs. This castle is quite tall, with four main floors and an attic space at the very top. It's built from red stones that were roughly shaped, known as "rubble." Because of its historical importance, Barjarg Tower is officially recognized as a "category B listed building." This means it's a building of special architectural or historic interest that needs to be protected.
