Who Built Barker Lake Golf Course?
Joseph Saltis was a very influential businessman in Chicago during the 1920s. He managed many operations, especially on the southwest side of the city. By 1929, his business faced many challenges. After some time, Joe Saltis decided to retire from his busy life in Chicago.
He chose to spend his later years at his beautiful estate near Winter, Wisconsin. This large property was known as the Barker Lake estate. It was a peaceful place where he could relax.
The Barker Lake Estate
Saltis's Barker Lake estate was quite impressive. It included several buildings, such as a main lodge, cozy cabins, and a barn. There was also a building that served as a bar and clubhouse. The most notable part of his estate was the nine-hole golf course.
This golf course was designed in a "Scottish style." Saltis had it built mainly for his own enjoyment and to entertain his guests during the summer months. When winter arrived, the golf course transformed into his personal hunting grounds.
Building the Course
Creating the Barker Lake Golf Course was a big project that took several years to finish. To make the course extra special, Saltis even had soil shipped in by train all the way from Kentucky! This special soil was used to improve the clay-like ground found in northern Wisconsin, making it perfect for a golf course.
