Barnaby Bernard Lintot (born December 1, 1675 – died February 9, 1736) was an important English publisher in London. He started his business around 1698. Born in Southwater, Sussex, Lintot began learning about the book trade in 1690. Even before his training was officially finished, he started selling books on his own. By 1698, he had already published six plays.

Who Was Bernard Lintot?

Bernard Lintot became a well-known publisher by focusing on books by famous writers. A publisher helps authors print and sell their books. Lintot was a competitor to another big publisher of his time, Jacob Tonson.

Moving His Bookshop

In 1700, Bernard Lintot married Catherine Langley. He then moved his bookshop to Fleet Street, a very busy street in London. In 1705, he moved his shop one last time to a place called the Cross Keys, also on Fleet Street. This spot was right next to a popular place called Nando's Coffee House and near Temple Bar, a famous gate.

Publishing Famous Authors

From 1705 to 1712, Lintot published all the plays performed at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, a major theater in London. He was one of the top publishers for many important writers of his time. These included playwrights like George Farquhar, John Dryden, [[William Congreve]], Richard Steele, Susanna Centlivre, and Colley Cibber.

Later Life and Legacy

In 1730, Bernard Lintot started to slow down his work. His son, Henry Lintot, began to run the publishing business with him. Bernard Lintot moved back to Sussex.

During his career, Lintot bought land near his family's property whenever he could. This meant he had a good amount of land by the time his son took over the business. In 1735, he was given an important role as the High Sheriff of Sussex, which meant he was a chief law enforcement officer for the county. Bernard Lintot passed away in February 1736.
