Barnaby Fitzpatrick (born Irish: Brían Mac Giolla Phádraig) (around 1478–1575) was an important Irish leader. He was the last person to claim the title of King of Osraige. Instead, he gave up his old family title to become the first Lord Baron Upper Ossory. This new title was given to him by King Henry VIII of England on June 11, 1541. This was part of the King's plan called Surrender and regrant, where Irish lords gave up their traditional titles and lands to the English Crown, and then received them back as English noble titles. Barnaby Fitzpatrick was also made a knight on July 1, 1543.

Barnaby Fitzpatrick's Life

Brían, who later became Barnaby, decided to work with the English king. In 1537, he agreed to give up his old family rights and traditions. Because of this, in 1541, Brían officially became Barnaby Fitzpatrick. He was made the First Baron of Upper Ossory at Castletown.

At one point, he was held in Waterford for a short time. This was because of some disagreements over land he had taken in an area called Leix.

Family and Children

Barnaby Fitzpatrick had many children. One of his important marriages was to Margaret Butler around 1532. She was the daughter of Piers Butler, 8th Earl of Ormond.

Barnaby and Margaret had several children, including:

  • Barnaby (around 1533–1581): He became the second Baron Upper Ossory after his father. When he was a boy, he was invited to study in London with the young King Edward VI of England. King Edward VI became very fond of him.
  • Florence: He became the third Baron Upper Ossory after his brother Barnaby passed away.
  • Donnell, who lived in Gortnaclea.
  • Geoffrey, who lived in Ballyawly.
  • Grainne or Grizzel, who married her cousin, Edmund Butler, 2nd Viscount Mountgarret.

Barnaby also had other children from different relationships. These children continued the family line in various parts of Ireland.

In 2002, researchers Ronan Fitzpatrick and Steve Zalewski published a book about the known descendants of Barnaby Fitz-Patrick, the 1st Baron Upper Ossory. A newer version came out in 2013. This book helps people understand the large family that came from Barnaby.
