A Look at the Hospital's History

Barnes-Jewish Hospital was created when two older hospitals joined together. These were Barnes Hospital and The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. Both hospitals were built in the early 1900s. They were close to each other near Forest Park. The two hospitals first worked together in 1993. Then, they officially merged into one hospital in 1996.

How Barnes Hospital Started

Barnes Hospital was founded because of a gift from Robert Barnes. He was a successful businessman who passed away in 1892. His plan was for a hospital to work with the Washington University School of Medicine. Barnes Hospital opened its doors on December 7, 1914. It was built at its current location. The hospital was designed by an architect named Theodore Link. When it first opened, it could hold 373 patients. Around this time, the St. Louis Children's Hospital also moved nearby. In 1915, the medical school also moved next to Barnes Hospital.

The Jewish Hospital Story

Jewish Hospital was started in 1902. Leaders of the St. Louis Jewish community wanted to help sick people. They wanted to care for "the sick and disabled of, 'any creed or nationality.'" The first location of the hospital was on 5414 Delmar Boulevard. More and more patients needed care, so the hospital needed to grow. In 1926, it moved to a new location. This new spot was just two blocks north of Barnes Hospital.
