The hospital is located in a part of St. Louis called the Central West End. It is a big part of the Washington University Medical Center. U.S. News & World Report, a well-known magazine, has often said Barnes-Jewish is one of the best hospitals in the whole country.

How Big Is Barnes-Jewish Hospital?

Hospital History

Barnes-Jewish Hospital was created when two older hospitals joined together. These were Barnes Hospital and The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis. Both hospitals were built in the early 1900s. They were located close to each other, near Forest Park.

The two hospitals first started working together in 1993. Then, in 1996, they officially became one hospital.

Barnes Hospital's Beginning

Barnes Hospital was started because of a man named Robert Barnes. He was a rich grocer and banker who passed away in 1892. He left money in his will to build a hospital. This hospital was meant to work with the Washington University School of Medicine.

Barnes Hospital opened its doors on December 7, 1914. It was built at its current location. The first hospital building could hold 373 patients. Around the same time, the St. Louis Children's Hospital also moved next to Barnes Hospital.

The Jewish Hospital Story

Jewish Hospital was started in 1902. Leaders from the Jewish community in St. Louis wanted to create it. Their goal was to care for "the sick and disabled of, 'any creed or nationality.'" This meant anyone who needed help, no matter their background.

The first Jewish Hospital was on Delmar Boulevard. But it quickly became too small. More and more patients needed care. So, in 1926, the hospital moved to a new, bigger location. This new spot was just two blocks north of Barnes Hospital.

Emergency Helicopter Pad

Barnes-Jewish Hospital has a special landing pad for helicopters. This is called a heliport. It is used for emergency air ambulance services. This means that seriously injured or sick people can be flown directly to the hospital very quickly.

Top Rankings and Awards

Barnes-Jewish Hospital has often been named one of America's best hospitals. This recognition comes from U.S. News & World Report. The hospital is known for being excellent in many different areas of medicine.

Some of its top-ranked specialties include cancer care and digestive disorders. It is also highly rated for ear, nose, and throat problems, and urology. In 2016, the hospital received a good quality rating from Medicare.
