History of the Church Building
Early Beginnings in 1868
The land where the Barnes Healing Church stands was bought in 1867. A student named Josiah Mee helped collect money for it. He was studying at the Wesleyan College on Richmond Hill. The church building was ready for worship in April 1868. Josiah Mee then sold the land to Reverend William Fiddian Moulton and eleven other people.
Changes Over the Years
In 1906, the church was sold again. This time, members of the church bought it. They renamed it the Barnes Primitive Methodist Church. Later, in 1949, the church officially rejoined the Methodist Church Union.
However, the Methodist Church later decided they no longer needed the building. So, in December 1966, a man named Sidney Ernest Wiles bought it.
Sidney Wiles and the Healing Church
Sidney Ernest Wiles was the person who started the "Barnes Healing Church." He ran it as a Christian Spiritualist Church for 28 years. He believed in spiritual healing and guidance. The church was a place for people to explore these beliefs.
Sidney Wiles passed away in 1994 when he was 96 years old. After his death, the church closed its doors. It remained closed for nine years.
Reopening and Volunteers
The church building was renovated using money from Sidney Wiles's estate. An estate is all the money and property a person leaves behind when they die. In 2003, a special company was created to manage the church. It reopened its doors in April 2003. Today, the Barnes Healing Church is run entirely by volunteers. These are people who give their time freely to help the church operate.
