Barney's Great Adventure is a fun musical film that came out in 1998. It's based on the popular children's TV show Barney & Friends. This movie was the very first time Barney the Dinosaur starred in his own full-length film!
The story follows Barney and three kids named Cody, Abby, and Marcella. They find a special, magical egg in a barn. Soon, they learn this egg can make dreams come true! Barney and the kids must get the egg back to the barn before it hatches.
The film was directed by Steve Gomer and produced by Sheryl Leach and Lyrick Studios. It was released by PolyGram Filmed Entertainment on March 27, 1998. Even though Barney was very popular at the time, the movie didn't make a lot of money. It was the only Barney movie released in theaters. Other Barney films went straight to video.
What's the Story About?
A Summer Adventure Begins
Cody, Abby, and their friend Marcella are spending their summer at their grandparents' farm. Cody thinks the farm is boring. Abby and Marcella try to cheer him up with a Barney doll. Cody grabs the doll and runs off, starting a game of "keep-away."
Barney Comes to Life
Cody hides the doll in the bathroom. He tells the girls to use their imagination. Suddenly, the Barney doll comes to life! Barney the Dinosaur takes the girls to play in the barn. Cody doesn't believe it at first. He says real dinosaurs don't talk.
A Magical Egg Appears
Later that night, Cody wishes for a real adventure. A shooting star then drops a mysterious egg into the barn. The next day, Cody finds the egg. Barney and the kids try to tell their grandparents about it.
The Dreammaker Egg
Barney gets distracted by baby Fig crying. Abby and Marcella take Cody and Barney to see Mrs. Goldfinch. She tells them the egg is a "dreammaker." This means it can make dreams happen!
Chasing the Egg
Cody accidentally knocks the egg off a table. It rolls onto a birdseed truck! Barney and the kids have to chase it through a big parade. The egg almost cracks, but Barney's friend B.J. catches it. However, B.J. accidentally tosses it away.
A Wild Chase
The chase continues through a French restaurant. Barney sings a song called "If All The Raindrops." Then, they follow the egg to a circus. Barney and the kids sing "We're Gonna Find A Way." They even fly through the sky to keep up!
Back to the Barn
Finally, they make it back to the barn just in time. Meanwhile, Baby Bop is looking for her lost blanket. B.J. and Baby Bop arrive right when the egg is about to hatch.
Twinken Hatches
The egg hatches into a cute, koala-like creature named Twinken. Twinken shows everyone Abby's dream, and then Barney's dream. Cody apologizes to Barney for being mean. He tells Barney he thinks he's cool. Barney accepts his apology, and they hug.
A Sweet Ending
Twinken then creates a magical fireworks show. The fireworks land in Barney's arms. Barney begins to sing his famous "I Love You" song. Everyone else joins in. Baby Bop gets sleepy, so B.J. decides it's time to go home. The movie ends with Twinken sitting next to Barney, who has turned back into his doll form.

Where Was it Filmed?
The movie was filmed in Canada, near the city of Montreal. They used places like the Morgan Arboretum in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue. This is a well-known wildlife sanctuary. The film crew, who were used to making movies, were a bit surprised to be working with a big purple dinosaur!
Original Story Ideas
The writer, Stephen White, had some different ideas for the movie at first.
- The egg was originally going to hatch a giant bird that missed its mom.
- Baby Bop and B.J. were supposed to have more scenes.
- The director, Steve Gomer, said some scenes were too expensive to film.
- Mrs. Goldfinch was planned to be a funnier character.
- The circus scenes and a character called "the Collector" were not in the first plans.
- Instead of flying on a log, Barney and the kids would have built a plane from cardboard boxes!

How Did it Do in Theaters?
Barney's Great Adventure first opened in a few theaters. It made about $2.2 million in its first weekend. A week later, it opened in more theaters but didn't make as much money. Overall, the movie earned about $12.2 million in the United States. This was less than the $15 million it cost to make.

The movie was released on VHS and DVD in the United States on September 1, 1998. It was re-released on DVD in 2012. In the United Kingdom, it came out on DVD in 2002.
