The title of Baron Dynham (also spelled Dinham, Dinaunt, or Dinan) was a special noble rank in England. It was given to important people by the King. This title was used two different times in English history.

The First Baron Dynham

The first person to be called Baron Dynham was Oliver de Dynham, 1st Baron Dynham. He lived from about 1234 to 1299. Oliver was from places like Hartland and Nutwell in Devon. He was also a feudal baron of Cardinham in Cornwall.

How Oliver Became a Baron

King Edward I officially called Oliver to attend Parliament. This was done using a special document called a "writ." These writs were sent from June 24, 1295, to August 26, 1296. They were addressed to "Olivero de Dynham" or "Dynaunt." Because of these official calls, Oliver became known as Baron Dynham.

What Happened to This Title

This first barony was not meant to be passed down through families. This was decided much later, in 1914. A special group in the House of Lords looked into a claim for the title. They found that if there was any way for the title to be passed down, it was "in abeyance." This means the title is on hold because there is no clear person to inherit it. No one in Oliver's family was called to Parliament for five generations after him.

The Second Baron Dynham

A new Baron Dynham title was created much later, in 1467. This title went to John Dynham, 1st Baron Dynham. He lived from about 1434 to 1501.

How John Became a Baron

John Dynham was called to Parliament by King Edward IV and King Henry VII. He received writs from February 28, 1467, to January 16, 1497. These writs were addressed to "Johanni Dynham de Care Dynham." This meant John Dynham of Cardinham. Because of these calls, he became known as Baron Dynham.

End of the Title

This second Baron Dynham title ended when John Dynham died in 1501. He did not have any sons to pass the title on to. When a noble title ends because there are no direct male heirs, it is called "extinct."
