History of the Earls of Plymouth
The title of Earl of Plymouth has a long and interesting past. It was first created in 1675.
=The First Earl of Plymouth (1675)
The very first Earl of Plymouth was Charles FitzCharles. He was a son of King Charles II. Charles FitzCharles became Earl in 1675. However, he passed away in 1680 without any children. Because of this, his title ended.
=The Second Earl of Plymouth (1682)
The title was created again in 1682 for Thomas Hickman-Windsor. He was already the 7th Baron Windsor. His family had a long history, going back to Sir Andrew Windsor. Sir Andrew was a knight who fought in a battle in 1513.
In 1529, Sir Andrew Windsor was given the title of Baron Windsor. This meant he could attend Parliament. Over the years, different members of the Windsor family held this title. One of them, Thomas, the 6th Baron, was a high-ranking officer in the Royal Navy.
When the 6th Baron died, his title was put on hold for a while. This is called "abeyance." It was later given to his nephew, Thomas Hickman. This Thomas then added "Windsor" to his name and became the 7th Baron. He was an important person, serving as the Governor of Jamaica and a local leader in Worcestershire. In 1682, he was made Earl of Plymouth.
The Earls of Plymouth continued through this family line. The 4th Earl, also named Other, was a local leader in Glamorganshire.
In 1833, the 6th Earl, Other, died without children. This caused the Baron Windsor title and the Earldom of Plymouth to separate. The Baron Windsor title went into abeyance again. It was later given to Lady Harriet Windsor, who became the 13th Baroness.
Lady Harriet's grandson, Robert, became the 14th Baron. He was a well-known politician. He held important government jobs like Paymaster-General and First Commissioner of Works.
=The Third Earl of Plymouth (1905)
In 1905, the title of Earl of Plymouth was created for a third time. It was given to Robert Windsor-Clive, who was the 14th Baron Windsor. He was also made Viscount Windsor and Earl of Plymouth. These new titles were part of the Peerage of the United Kingdom.
The first Earl of this new creation was succeeded by his son, Ivor, the second Earl. Ivor was also a politician. He held several important roles in the government, like Captain of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms and Under-Secretary of State for different departments.
Ivor's son, Other, became the third Earl in 1943. He passed away in 2018. His son, Ivor, is now the fourth and current Earl of Plymouth.
Other Notable Family Members
Another important person from this family was the Honourable Thomas Windsor, 1st Viscount Windsor. He was a younger son of the 1st Earl of Plymouth (from the second creation). He was given the title of Viscount Windsor in 1699. After his son died, this title also ended for a while. However, it was later used as a courtesy title by the Marquess of Bute family.
The main family home for the Earls of Plymouth used to be Hewell Grange in Worcestershire. Today, the family has residences in Oakly Park in Shropshire and a house in London.
