The first name for this area was Cabarcos. It seems this name came from "Civarcos." Ancient writers like Pliny mentioned this town, saying it was located between the mouths of two rivers, the Eo and the Masma. Even during the Middle Ages, people still used the name Cabarcos or Cibarcos.

The oldest document that uses the name Barreiros is from the year 775. This document describes King Don Silo giving land to monks. He wanted them to build a monastery there.

Around the year 1400, a person named Pardo de Cela was in charge of the Santa Cristina de Celeiro area. Later, in 1406, Lopez Diaz gave the Terrería de Cabarcos land to the Bishop of Mondoñedo. Another important person, Pedro Pardo de Cabarcos, who was the nephew of Marshal Pardo de Cela, sold land to help the Catholic Monarchs. This money helped them during the fall of Granada. A brave person named John of Ben, who was from Celeiro Santa Cristina, was known for his courage in a war in Aragon, fighting alongside Don Juan II.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, many people from Barreiros moved away, often to the Americas. These emigrants were sometimes called "Americans." When some of them returned, they helped their hometown a lot. They contributed to cultural development, helped set up local schools, and improved the town. They also built special "Indian buildings," which are unique and beautiful features of the area today.

Population of Barreiros

Barreiros currently has about 3,252 people living there. The town's population dropped a lot at the beginning of the 20th century. This was mainly because so many people moved to the Americas. Even now, the population continues to decrease slightly.

Most of the people in Barreiros live spread out across the region. Only about 16% of the population lives in the main town center. The other 84% live in smaller villages and areas throughout the countryside.
