Discovering Barrett Ridge's Past
How Barrett Ridge Began
Barrett Ridge was founded in 1858. It was started by a man named Edmond Barrett. He was an immigrant from Ireland. Edmond left his home country in 1848 during a very difficult time. This period was known as the Great Famine. Many people in Ireland faced hunger and hardship then.
Edmond, also known as Ned, came to America looking for a better life. He worked very hard. He even sent money back home to his family in Ireland. In 1852, Ned traveled south and then west. He finally settled in Mississippi.
The Barrett Family Home
On December 29, 1858, Ned married Mary Vina Warren. They made their first home in a log cabin. This cabin was on a gentle hill near Saltillo. By March 10, 1866, Ned had saved enough money to buy the land. This land then became known as Barrett Ridge.
Ned and Mary had a large family. They raised 11 children in their log cabin. Many of their children grew up and built their own homes on Barrett Ridge. They also raised their own families there.
Who Lives in Barrett Ridge Today?
Barrett Ridge is about 10 miles north of Tupelo. It is also 4 miles northwest of Saltillo. Today, many people living in Barrett Ridge are descendants of Edmond Barrett. This means they are part of his family tree. Some of the family names include Barrett, Larkin, Bishop, Poppelreiter, Greenwood, Gusmus, Long, and Brown.
Even today, some of Edmond's relatives still live in Ireland. They live in places like Boola, Bweeng, and Mallow in County Cork. This is the same area where Ned lived before he came to America.
