The Barrière River (which is Rivière Barrière in French) is a small river in Quebec, Canada. It flows into Quinze Lake (Témiscamingue). The river is located near the town of Rémigny, Quebec in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue region.

People enjoy fun activities like tourism around the river. Farming is also important in the area. The river usually freezes over in mid-November and stays frozen until late April. It's generally safe to walk or play on the ice from mid-December to early April.

Where is the Barrière River?

The Barrière River is surrounded by several other important bodies of water. These are called its "hydrographic slopes."

  • To the north, you'll find Rémigny Lake and Barrier Lake.
  • To the east, there's Quinze Lake (Temiscamingue) (specifically Tigre Bay), Lac Lebret, and Beaumesnil Lake.
  • To the south, you'll see Quinze Lake (Temiscamingue) (Barrière Bay) and the famous Ottawa River.
  • To the west, there are Prévost Lake, Wright Creek, and Burwash Creek.

Where the River Starts

The Barrière River begins at the southern end of Rémigny Lake. This lake is about 23.8 kilometers (14.8 miles) long and sits at an altitude of 266 meters (873 feet). The starting point of the river is in the southern part of the town of Rémigny, Quebec.

How the River Flows

The Barrière River is quite short, flowing for only about 1.0 kilometer (0.6 miles). Here's how it flows:

  • It travels about 0.5 kilometers (0.3 miles) to the southeast. During this part, it passes the western side of the village of Rémigny, Quebec and goes under a bridge.
  • Then, it flows about 0.5 kilometers (0.3 miles) to the northeast, still along the west side of the village, until it reaches its end.

Where the River Ends

The Barrière River empties into the northern shore of Quinze Lake (Témiscamingue). This spot is located:

  • About 1.7 kilometers (1.1 miles) southeast of where Barriere Lake flows in.
  • About 1.4 kilometers (0.9 miles) south of the bridge over the Barrière River in Rémigny, Quebec.
  • North of the main mouth of Quinze Lake.
  • About 29.1 kilometers (18.1 miles) northeast of Lake Timiskaming.
