Barry Appleby (born August 30, 1909 – died March 11, 1996) was a talented British cartoonist. He is best known for creating the popular comic strip The Gambols. This comic appeared in the Daily Express newspaper.
The Gambols Comic Strip
The first The Gambols comic strip was published on March 16, 1950. Barry Appleby's wife, Dobs, wrote the stories for the strip. The adventures of the characters were actually based on their own daily lives. This made the comic very relatable and funny for readers.
Early Life and Career
Barry Appleby's father was E. J. Appleby. He was the editor of a well-known British car magazine called Autocar in the 1940s.
First Illustrations
Barry Appleby started his career early. He contributed his very first illustration to Autocar in 1931. This was the magazine his father edited.
Writing for Autocar
Later, Barry Appleby also wrote articles for Autocar. He used a special pen name, or alias, for his writing. His alias was "Helix."
