Sir Barry Close (1756–1813) was an important army general and leader. He worked for the East India Company. He was known for his smart thinking and for understanding different cultures.

Who Was Barry Close?

Barry Close was born in Armagh, Ireland, in 1756. He was the third son in his family. At just 15 years old, he joined the Madras army in India. This was a part of the East India Company's forces. He quickly moved up the ranks, becoming an officer by 1773.

A Smart Leader and Linguist

Barry Close showed great bravery early on. He helped defend Tellicherry in 1780. This was against the forces of Hyder Ali. Close was very good at leading his soldiers. He treated them with respect. This stopped his group from rebelling.

He also became known for speaking many languages. He always talked to his soldiers in their own language. This helped him earn their trust.

Diplomat and Negotiator

Close was also very good at solving problems. He worked with important leaders. He became a captain in 1783. After this, he helped make peace with Tipu Sultan. He also played a key role in the Siege of Seringapatam (1792).

Later, he became the first British representative in Mysore. This was an important Indian kingdom. He also worked with other rulers. His knowledge of languages like Persian was very helpful. In 1805, he became a colonel. He even helped stop a soldier rebellion in Madras. He talked to the soldiers in their language.

Later Life and Legacy

Barry Close became a major-general in 1810. He was given a special honor in 1812. He became a baronet, which is a title of honor. Sir Barry Close passed away in London in 1813. He was buried at St Marylebone Parish Church.

A town in India was named after him. It was called Closepet near Mysore. It is now known as Ramanagara.
