What's in a Name? The Bartibog River's Story

The Bartibog River gets its name from a special person. It honors Bartholomew La Bogue. He was a Micmac chief. The local people called him Balt Bogue. The French and English settlers later called him Bartabogue. This is how the river got its unique name.

Where Does the Bartibog River Flow?

The Bartibog River starts in the northeastern part of Northumberland County. It flows first towards the east. Then it turns and flows south. Finally, it joins the Miramichi River. This meeting point is near the community of Oak Point-Bartibog Bridge.

The River's Surroundings

The land around the Bartibog River is mostly rural. This means it's not a big city. You'll find many forests there. There are also small farms. The river flows through several communities. These include Oak Point-Bartibog Bridge, Lower Newcastle-Russellville, Bartibog, and Bartibog Station.

Below the community of Russellville, the river becomes tidal. This means its water level changes with the ocean's tides.

Moody's Point and Early Settlements

There's a special spot where the Bartibog River meets the Miramichi River. It's called Moody's Point. On the east side of the Bartibog, you'll find one of the oldest churches. It's called Sts Peter and Paul's. This Roman Catholic church was built in the 1850s.

Who Settled Along the River?

People from Scotland began settling along the lower parts of the Bartibog River. They arrived starting in the 1780s. These settlers had different religious backgrounds. Some were Catholic, and some were Presbyterian. Later, several Irish families moved there. A few Acadian families also made their homes along the river.
