Bartlett's Childers was a very important horse in the 1700s. He was a famous Thoroughbred stallion, which means he was a male horse used for breeding. He helped create many of the fast racehorses we see today.

The Story of Bartlett's Childers

Early Life and Family

Bartlett's Childers was born in 1716. He was bred by a person named Leonard Childers. His father was a famous horse called the Darley Arabian. His mother was a mare named Betty Leedes.

He had a very famous full-brother named Flying Childers. Flying Childers was an amazing racehorse who was never beaten in a race! Interestingly, Bartlett's Childers never raced himself.

Why He Was Called "Bleeding Childers"

Bartlett's Childers was sometimes called "Bleeding Childers." This was because he often had nosebleeds. This condition is known as exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage in horses.

He was sold by a man named Mr. Bartlett. Mr. Bartlett lived in a place called Nutwith Cote, near Masham in Yorkshire, Great Britain.

Bartlett's Childers as a Breeding Horse

His Important Role as a Sire

Even though Bartlett's Childers never raced, he became a very successful breeding horse, also known as a stallion. He stood (meaning he was available for breeding) in Masham, Yorkshire.

His success showed horse breeders something very important. It proved that horses who had never raced could still produce amazing racehorses. This was a big discovery at the time!

Champion Sire and Famous Descendants

Bartlett's Childers became a champion sire in 1742. This means he was the top breeding horse in Great Britain and Ireland that year. Many of his children became famous racehorses or important breeding horses themselves.

Some of his notable children included Smales's Childers, Grey Childers, and Squirt. Squirt was especially important because he was the father of a horse named Marske. Marske then became the father of one of the most famous racehorses ever: Eclipse!

Through Eclipse, Bartlett's Childers' family line is still very strong in Thoroughbred horses today. Many modern racehorses can trace their family tree back to him.

Family Tree Highlights

Bartlett's Childers had many important descendants. Here are a few of the most famous ones:

* Potoooooooo * King Fergus * Mercury * Dungannon * Saltram * Volunteer

Pedigree Information

Bartlett's Childers was a bay stallion born in 1716. His father was the famous Darley Arabian. His mother was Betty Leedes. His family tree shows that he had some important ancestors appearing more than once in his pedigree. This is called inbreeding. For example, a horse named Spanker appears multiple times in his mother's side of the family.
