Who Was Bartlett's Childers?
Bartlett's Childers was born in 1716. A man named Leonard Childers bred him. His father was the famous Darley Arabian. His mother was a mare named Betty Leedes.
He had a full-brother named Flying Childers. Flying Childers was a super fast horse who never lost a race! Bartlett's Childers, however, never raced. He was not trained to run in competitions.
People once thought Betty Leedes only had Flying Childers. But now, experts believe she also had Bartlett's Childers. He got the nickname "Bleeding Childers" because he sometimes bled from his nose. This can happen to horses after exercise. He was later sold by Mr. Bartlett. Mr. Bartlett lived in a place called Nutwith Cote in Yorkshire.
His Amazing Career as a Sire
Bartlett's Childers lived in Masham, Yorkshire. Even though he never raced, he became a very successful father of racehorses. He proved that horses who don't race can still have champion babies. This was a big discovery for horse breeders!
In 1742, he became the champion sire. This means his children won more races than any other sire's children that year.
His Famous Children
Bartlett's Childers had many important children. Some of them were Smales's Childers and Grey Childers. He also fathered Squirt, Coughing Polly, and Hartley's Little Mare.
Squirt was a very important son. He became the father of two famous horses: Marske and Syphon. Hartley's Little Mare was also a key horse. She was the mother of several top horses, like Blank and Shakespear. Blank even became a champion sire himself!
The Legacy of Eclipse
One of Bartlett's Childers's most famous grandsons was Eclipse. Eclipse was a son of Marske. Just like Flying Childers, Eclipse was an undefeated racehorse. He won every race he entered!
Today, most Thoroughbred racehorses can trace their family tree back to Eclipse. This means Bartlett's Childers's family line is very strong. It is the most important family line in modern Thoroughbred racing.
