The Bartlett-Cushman House is a really old and special house in Stratham, New Hampshire. You can find it at 82 Portsmouth Road. This house was built a long time ago, around 1810, and it's a great example of a building style called Federal architecture. Because it's so important to history, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2014.

What Makes This House Special?

The Bartlett-Cushman House is in the middle of Stratham town. It's a large, two-and-a-half-story house made of wood. The outside is covered with clapboards, which are long, thin boards.

Federal Style Details

This house is a good example of a "Federal-style double house." This means it was designed to look like two homes joined together.

  • The main front door has special windows on the sides and columns next to it.
  • Above the main door, there's a beautiful fan-shaped window and a decorative frame.
  • Other doors on the house are simpler, with small windows above them.
  • On the south side, there's a part of the house that sticks out. It has two stories and narrow, rounded windows. This part was probably added later, around the mid-1800s.
  • The roof is flat on top and slopes down on all sides, which is called a hip roof. It also has two rounded windows on the front, called dormers.
  • A building from the 1800s connects the main house to a stable, which is a building for horses.

Who Lived Here? A Look at Its History

The Bartlett-Cushman House was built in 1827 for a man named Josiah Bartlett III. He was a doctor who had just started his medical practice in Stratham and got married that same year.

Building the House

A local builder named Joshua Pike constructed the house. The foundation of the house is very interesting! It shows one of the first times people in New Hampshire used a special technique to split large granite stones. They used "plug drills and feathers" to carefully break the granite slabs. The fancy Federal-style decorations on the house are also some of the best in the town.

From Family Home to Duplex

The Bartlett family lived in the house until 1904. After that, a few different people owned the house for short periods. Then, in 1904, Susie and Arthur Cushman bought it. The Cushmans changed the house into a duplex, which means it became two separate living spaces. Each half was used by different parts of their large family.

The House Today

The last person from the Cushman family who lived in the house passed away in 2003. Their family then sold the house's belongings and later sold the house itself to the town of Stratham in 2013.
