Bartolomé Flores facts for kids
Bartolomé Flores (born 1511, died November 11, 1585) was a German explorer. He is thought to be the first German person to arrive in Chile. He came with the expedition of Pedro de Valdivia. This was at the start of the Spanish conquest of Chile.
Life Story
Bartolomé was born in Nuremberg, a town in Franconia, Germany. This was around 1506 or 1511. His parents were John and Agatha. His Spanish last name, Flores, means "flowers." It was a translation of his original German name, which we don't know today.
Around 1528, Bartolomé traveled to America. He first stayed in places like La Española, Santo Domingo, and Nicaragua. Then he went to Peru to help Francisco Pizarro. There, he met Pedro de Valdivia.
Bartolomé joined Valdivia's group to explore and conquer Chile. He helped defend the new settlement of Santiago. Local tribes, led by chief Michimalonco, attacked Santiago on September 11, 1541. Bartolomé was part of the defense.
In Chile, Bartolomé married Elvira. She was the only daughter of Tala Canta Ilabe, a local chief (called a Cacique) from Talagante. Bartolomé and Elvira had a daughter named Águeda Flores. Águeda later became the grandmother of a famous person known as La Quintrala.
Bartolomé Flores passed away in Talagante in 1585.
