The Barton's robber frog (scientific name: Eleutherodactylus bartonsmithi) is a small frog. It belongs to a group of frogs called the Eleutherodactylidae family. This special frog is only found in one place in the world. It lives in southeastern Cuba.

This frog is known from two main areas. One is near the Yumurí River in Guantánamo Province. The other is in Cupeyal, which is in Holguín Province. The Cupeyal area is part of the famous Alejandro de Humboldt National Park.

About Its Name

This frog's scientific name, bartonsmithi, honors a person. It was named after Barton L. Smith. He was a herpetologist, which is a scientist who studies reptiles and amphibians. Barton L. Smith helped another scientist, Albert Schwartz. They worked together studying animals in the Caribbean.

Where It Lives

Barton's robber frog lives in forests that are not very high up. These are often dense, closed forests. You might also find them in coffee plantations. These frogs like to live in trees and bushes. They are often heard calling from shrubs. Sometimes, they can also be found hiding in cracks in rocks.
