Life and Career
Bartosz Zmarzlik grew up in Szczecin, Poland. His older brother, Paweł Zmarzlik, was also a speedway rider. Bartosz first got attention in 2012 when he raced in the 2012 Speedway Grand Prix of Poland. He was given a "wild card" entry, which means he was invited to race even though he wasn't a regular competitor.
He did incredibly well in that race. At just 17 years and 72 days old, he became the youngest rider to ever finish in the top three (on the podium) in a Speedway Grand Prix. He ended up in third place, scoring 13 points. In 2014, he briefly raced for the Birmingham Brummies team in Great Britain.
In September 2015, Bartosz won the GP Challenge. This win meant he earned a permanent spot in the 2016 Speedway Grand Prix series. This was his first time racing as a full-time Grand Prix rider. He finished third overall in 2016. The next year, he was fifth, and in 2018, he finished second, right behind the multiple World Champion Tai Woffinden.
In 2019, Bartosz joined the Slangerup team in the Danish league. In 2020, he won his second Speedway World Championship. He was the first rider since 2008 to win two titles in a row! In July 2021, he also became the Polish individual champion. He finished second in the World Championship that year.
Bartosz won his third World Championship title in 2022. He won easily, scoring 166 points, which was 33 points more than the second-place rider. He also won three Grand Prix races that year in Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden. He also became the first rider since 2002 to win the Polish national title two years in a row.
In 2023, Bartosz had an amazing season and won his fourth World title. He helped the Polish team win the European Team Speedway Championship for the second time in a row. He won three of the first five Grand Prix races that season. In July, he was part of the Polish team that won the gold medal in the 2023 Speedway World Cup final.
Later in 2023, he won another Grand Prix in Latvia. This win tied him with fellow Polish rider Tomasz Gollob for 22 career Grand Prix wins. Even though he was disqualified from the Danish Grand Prix for wearing the wrong racing suit, he still won the final race in Toruń. This win secured his fourth world title and tied him with Jason Crump for 23 Grand Prix wins. He also matched Crump's record of five Grand Prix wins in one season.
In 2024, Bartosz won the 2024 Speedway Grand Prix of Sweden. This victory broke Jason Crump's record of 23 Grand Prix wins, making Bartosz the rider with the most Grand Prix wins ever!
