Tai Woffinden (born 10 August 1990) is a famous British speedway rider. He is known for being a three-time World Champion. He won these titles in 2013, 2015, and 2018.

Tai Woffinden's Early Life

Tai Woffinden was born in Scunthorpe, England. His dad, Rob Woffinden, was also a speedway rider. When Tai was four years old, his parents moved to Perth, Western Australia. He grew up there, but he always raced for Great Britain.

Tai started his speedway journey in Perth, Australia. He won the Western Australian Under-16 title in 2006. Soon after, he began his British career with the Scunthorpe Scorpions in the Conference League in 2006. With the Scorpions, he won many trophies, including the Championship and the Knockout Cup.

When he turned 16, Tai raced as a guest rider for the Sheffield Tigers in the Premier League. He also signed a full contract with the Wolverhampton Wolves, an Elite League team.

Rising Through the Ranks

In 2007, Tai returned to Scunthorpe and also joined the Rye House Rockets on loan. The Rockets won the Premier League Championship that year. He also rode for the Poole Pirates in the Elite League.

Tai made history in 2007 by becoming the youngest rider to reach the British Championship Final. Later that year, he won the Conference League Riders Champion title. Just two days later, he also became the British Under 18 Champion.

Great Britain Debut and Junior Titles

Tai continued to ride for the Rye House Rockets in 2008. This was also the year he first raced for the Great Britain team in the Speedway World Cup. He impressed everyone with his skills.

In 2008, Tai became the British Under-21 Champion. He won the final race after a strong performance. He also won the Premier League Riders Championship. Tai was the first rider to hold both the British Under-18 and British Under-21 titles in the same year. He was also the first to win the British Under-18 title two years in a row.

In 2009, Tai joined his main club, the Wolverhampton Wolves, for the Elite League season.

World Championship Success

In 2013, Tai Woffinden achieved his dream of becoming a Speedway Grand Prix World Champion. He was the eighth British rider to win this title. He was also the first British rider since 1992 to hold both the British Championship and the World Championship in the same year. At the time, he was the youngest World Champion in the modern Grand Prix era.

After finishing fourth in 2014, Tai bounced back in 2015 to win his second Speedway World Championship. This made him the first British rider since 1962 to win two individual world titles. He won Grand Prix events in the Czech Republic and Scandinavia that year.

In 2016, Tai and the Great Britain team were runners-up to Poland in the 2016 Speedway World Cup final. He continued to perform well, finishing second in the 2016 World Championship and third in 2017.

In 2018, Tai won his third world title. He finished the 2018 Speedway Grand Prix season with a clear lead over his rivals. He won four Grand Prix races that year, including events in Warsaw and Toruń. After a tough 2019 season, he came back strong in 2020 to win the silver medal.

Team World Champion and Recent Years

In 2021, Tai became a team world champion when Great Britain won the 2021 Speedway of Nations, which is the world team title. He also won the Czech Grand Prix that year.

In 2023, Tai was part of the British team that won the silver medal in the 2023 Speedway World Cup final. He also joined the Sheffield Tigers in British speedway. Later in 2023, he had an injury during the British Grand Prix, which meant he missed the last two rounds of the World Championship.

In 2024, Tai signed with Sheffield again. He had another serious crash during a Grand Prix event in Gorzów, which caused a bad elbow injury and ended his season early. However, his team, Sheffield, won the Knockout Cup that year, even though he couldn't race in the final.

In March 2025, Tai had a very serious crash during a race in Poland. He was badly hurt and needed a lot of time to recover in the hospital. The speedway community sent him many messages of support. Tai is now recovering well and has left the hospital.
