Basic is a small place in Clarke County, Mississippi, in the United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. Instead, it's part of the larger county.
History of Basic
Basic was once a busy little place because it was built along the Mobile and Ohio Railroad. Long ago, it had two sawmills, which cut wood, and two general stores where people could buy almost anything they needed.
Post Office and Name Origin
A post office opened in Basic in 1900, helping people send and receive mail. It stayed open until 1945. For a while, some people also called the place "Basic City." No one is quite sure how the name "Basic" came to be.
Basic in Books
A famous writer named Joan Didion visited Basic in the 1970s. She wrote that the community was so small, it wasn't even shown on maps back then.
Basic City Shale
There's even a type of rock formation called "Basic City Shale" that gets its name from this community. This special kind of rock is part of the Tallahatta Formation.
