What Are Our Basic Needs?
There have been many ideas about what our basic needs are. However, most experts agree on a few key areas. These are the things that must be satisfied for a person to survive and thrive.
Maslow's Idea of Needs
A famous thinker named Abraham Maslow had a great idea about human needs. He said that people have different levels of needs, and some are more important than others. He even drew a pyramid to show this! At the very bottom of his pyramid are the basic needs. These are the ones we must have before we can even think about other things like learning or being creative.
Different Kinds of Basic Needs
Maslow and other experts agree that basic needs fall into a few main groups. These groups help us understand what people need most.
Needs for Our Body
These are the things our bodies absolutely need to keep working. They are also called biological needs.
- Breathing: We need clean air to breathe every second.
- Warmth: Our bodies need to stay at a certain temperature. This means having proper clothing or shelter.
- Food and Drink: We need enough healthy food and clean water to stay alive and have energy.
- Sleep: Our bodies and minds need rest to recover and function well.
Needs for Safety
Once our body's needs are met, we need to feel safe. This means being protected from harm.
- A Place to Live: Having a safe home protects us from weather and danger.
- Health: Access to doctors and medicine helps us stay healthy and recover when we are sick.
- Protection: Feeling safe from danger, crime, or accidents is very important.
- Law and Order: Having rules and laws helps keep communities safe and fair for everyone.
Social Needs
Humans are social creatures. We need to feel connected to others.
- Friends and Partners: Having friends and loving relationships helps us feel like we belong.
- Communication: Being able to talk and share feelings with others is key to feeling connected.
When Basic Needs Are Not Met
When people cannot meet their basic needs, it is called absolute poverty. This means they might not have enough food, a safe place to live, or access to healthcare. People in absolute poverty often spend almost all their money just trying to get these very basic things. It is a big challenge for many people around the world.
