Basil Gage Catterns (born June 20, 1886 – died February 5, 1969) was an important person at the Bank of England. He held two very big jobs there: he was the Chief Cashier and later the Deputy Governor.

Basil Gage Catterns was a key figure in the world of banking in England. He helped manage the country's money system for many years. His work at the Bank of England was very important during a time of big changes.

Early Life and Education

Basil Gage Catterns was born in a town called Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, England. His father was Reverend T.E.S. Catterns. Basil went to school at Trent College in Nottinghamshire. He also had a nephew named Basil W. T. Catterns, who became a businessman in Australia.

Working at the Bank of England

Before joining the Bank of England, Basil Catterns worked for five years at another bank. It was called the Manchester & Liverpool District Bank. He started there in Accrington.

In 1908, he joined the famous Bank of England. He quickly moved up the ranks. In 1923, he became the Assistant Chief Cashier. This job meant he was in charge of the bank's money.

Chief Cashier Role

On March 27, 1929, Basil Catterns became the Chief Cashier. This is a very important role. The Chief Cashier is responsible for all the banknotes issued by the Bank of England. You can often see their signature on old banknotes! He held this position until April 17, 1934. After that, Kenneth Peppiatt took over the job.

Deputy Governor and Retirement

After being Chief Cashier, Basil Catterns became an executive director at the Bank of England. This meant he was part of the bank's main leadership team. From 1936 until he retired in 1945, he served as the Deputy Governor. This was one of the highest positions at the bank.

Other Public Service

Besides his banking career, Basil Catterns also served his community. He was appointed the High Sheriff of the County of London for the years 1940–41. This was an important ceremonial role.

Family Life

Basil Catterns was married to Evelyn Nancy Dodd. They had a son named John Burleigh. Sadly, John passed away in 1945 when his Spitfire plane crashed.
