Basil III (born Vasileios Georgiadis) was an important leader in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from July 13, 1925, until he passed away on September 29, 1929. He was born in 1846 in Skutari, which is now part of Üsküdar, Istanbul.
Early Life and Education
Vasileios Georgiadis was born in 1846. He grew up in Skutari, a historic area. He was very dedicated to learning.
He went to the University of Athens to study. There, he focused on theology, which is the study of religious faith. He also studied philology, which is the study of language and literature.
Later, he continued his advanced studies. He earned a PhD from the University of Munich. This shows he was a very smart and educated person.
Becoming Patriarch
After many years of study and service, Basil III became the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople. This happened on July 13, 1925. The Ecumenical Patriarch is the spiritual leader of many Orthodox Christians around the world. It is a very important and respected position.
He served in this role for several years. He passed away on September 29, 1929, in Istanbul. He was 82 or 83 years old.
