A Look at the Ancient Basilica

How Old Is It?

Some experts believe this church was built around the 5th century. This makes it a paleochristian temple. That means it was built during the early days of Christianity.

However, other historians have a different idea. They think it might have been built much later. They suggest it was built in the 9th or 10th century. This was during a time called the Reconquista in Spain.

Built on Roman History

The Basilica of Saint Mary of the Arches was built on top of something even older. It was built over a Roman mausoleum. A mausoleum is a large building that holds tombs. This Roman building was from the 3rd century.

Builders of the Basilica reused many pieces from the old Roman mausoleum. They also used parts from other buildings. These pieces came from an ancient Roman city. That city was called Tritium Megalon.
