Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Conewago facts for kids
The Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, also known as Conewago Chapel, is an important Roman Catholic church. It is located in Conewago Township, Pennsylvania. This church is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg.
What is Conewago Chapel?
The Conewago Chapel was built a long time ago, between 1785 and 1787. It is made of brownstone, which is a type of reddish-brown sandstone. The walls are very thick, about three feet!
The building is about two and a half stories tall. It has a special entrance built in the Federal style. This style was popular in the United States after it became independent. In 1873, an 80-foot-high spire was added to the church. A three-story building, called a rectory, is attached to the chapel. It was also built in 1787.
This church is very special because it is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the United States made of stone. A famous priest named Prince Gallitzin worked here from 1795 to 1799.
A Special Church Status
On June 30, 1962, the Conewago Chapel was given a special title. It became a "minor basilica". This means it is a church with special historical or spiritual importance. In 1975, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are important to the history of the United States.
Leaders of the Church
Many priests have served as the pastor (leader) of the Conewago Chapel over the years. They have guided the church community for centuries.
